What Is a £10,000 Pay Rise Worth?
The headline rise is £833.33 a month. The estimated cash increase in this example is £486.49 a month on average.
Consider a full-year employee in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, paid monthly, with no pension contributions, no student loan and no other income. These are illustrative assumptions, not a typical-worker claim.
| Over the Year | £50,000 Salary | £60,000 Salary |
|---|---|---|
| Income Tax | £7,486.00 | £11,432.00 |
| Employee National Insurance | £2,993.88 | £3,210.00 |
| Take-home cash | £39,520.12 | £45,358.00 |
| Monthly-average take-home | £3,293.34 | £3,779.83 |
Where Did the Difference Go?
The £10,000 gross rise produces £5,837.88 more annual cash in this model. Income Tax rises by £3,946.00 and National Insurance by £216.12. The additional cash is roughly 58p per extra £1 of gross pay across these two salaries. That is a comparison result, not a universal marginal tax rate.
The higher income-tax rate applies only to the portion in that band, not suddenly to the whole salary. National Insurance follows separate monthly bands. That is why one overall “tax percentage” can be a poor shortcut for comparing offers.
What Could Change Your Answer?
A pension contribution, loan deduction or Scottish tax band can change the result. A raise partway through the tax year is also different from receiving the higher salary for all 12 months. A bonus is not modelled by this example. The tool estimates whole-year Income Tax, so an actual payslip can differ because of PAYE coding and cumulative deductions.
Use It as a Decision Check
Compare the cash increase with extra costs you would actually incur, such as travel or working from another location. Then examine pension contributions separately. The calculator does not assign value to working hours, wellbeing, job security or career prospects; a cash figure cannot settle those parts of a job decision.
